Older Haag-Streit slit lamps can be enhanced by converting them to use a 14mm LED illumination system. Many eye clinics are still using tungsten bulbs in slit lamps, which can lead to equipment down-time when the bulb needs to be replaced.

An LED enhancement is quick and simple to perform, with little downtime. Our Service Engineers will visit you and install the conversion kit in just a few hours. For further information, view our LED upgrade brochure or email the HS-UK Service Division at ledupgrade@haag-streit-uk.com

Slit lamp troubleshooting FAQs

Please make sure that the power supply unit which sits in the cage underneath the table is switched on.  If this does not solve your issue then please contact our support team on 01279 883720 or email service.uk@haag-streit.com.

The green lights indicate there should not be a fault. It is only if the lights are red that there is an issue. Please make sure the slit is open using the knob on the lower illumination part of the slit lamp and ensure that the illumination control on the table is on. If this does not solve your issue then please contact our support team on 01279 883720 or email service.uk@haag-streit.com.

There are a number of reasons why the light may not be visible and there are a few checks that you can do to help find the problem.

  • Check the slit width - when the slit beam is fully closed, you will not see any light. Try fully opening the slit.

  • Check the filters - if the filter wheel is not fully engaged or sat between two filters, then the light will be blocked. Move the sliver filter slider to the open filter.

  • Check the slit height - If the slit height is inbetween two hight apertures, the light will not be visible. Change the slit height to its highest setting.

  • Check the power - sometimes, if a slit lamp has been moved, the power lead may have been partially pulled out. Check that the lead is fully plugged in and power is going through to the table. Be careful when checking electrics and turn-off device at the plug before checking cables. Most table models have a light to indicate that the table is turned on / has power. Some tables may have more that one power switch, so check around the table to see if there is a second power switch.

  • Check the bulb (not applicable to LED slit lamps) - older slit lamps use a bulb to provide illumination. If the bulb has blown, then no light will be visible. The bulb can be easily changed. Be careful! If the slit lamp has been used recently as the bulb and housing will be very hot. Wait for the lamp to cool before changing the blub. Another option is to upgrade, if suitable, to LED.

Check the magnification. If the magnification is between two settings, the light will not be visible through the optics.

Check that the slit lamp illumination is centred. If the slit lamp has been de-centred for an indirect illumination technique, this can make getting a sharp, in-focus slit beam challenging. Check the centre dial on the back of the illumination dial is tight, and the slit lamp will self-centre. Also check what setting the eyepieces are on. If these are off, then it will be difficult to focus and may cause eye strain. Try using a focusing rod to set the optics.

Traditional Haag-Streit slit lamps have an unparalleled life expectancy of over 27 years. Some are still in use after 40 years. Over time, debris can build up and moving parts need to be oiled. The Haag-Streit UK Service Division can service the slit lamps and help keep them working for years to come. We recommend an annual service to keep slit lamps in the best condition. We can also offer advice on LED upgrades and when to consider replacing an old slit lamp.
