Moorfields Eye Hospital Bespoke Training

Gemma Edwards, HS-UK Product Manager and 'Imaging Expert' recently delivered bespoke slit lamp imaging training at Moorfields Imaging Department. Read the full case study to discover how the training improved staff confidence, was tailored to individual requirements, and why imaging skills are so vitally important.

Gemma, how did you work with the customer to plan the session?

After identifying a need for training on the use of the BX 900 professional imaging slit lamp, the Head of Imaging at Moorfields requested a bespoke training session proposal from us. An initial meeting allowed the session to be planned in full collaboration with Moorfields staff. We created an agenda in advance which was tailored to their specific requirements, at their level of expertise.

How was the training delivered?

We delivered a full day of slit lamp imaging training to small groups, including basic fundamentals of imaging devices and image capture during the morning, followed by more advanced imaging techniques in the afternoon. The training involved lectures focused on imaging principles and hands-on practical sessions throughout the day.

“Slit lamp imaging can be very daunting to perform if individuals have not had adequate training and support at the beginning of their career. I find it so rewarding to see the increased confidence of trainees when I am teaching them these vital skills. Imaging training provides clear clinical benefits not only for the participants and their departments, but most significantly, for patients.”

What were your goals and objectives for the training?

Our goal was to build confidence and consistency across the team when using the BX 900 professional imaging system. We wanted to ensure that every member of staff had the opportunity to learn and practice the correct techniques to capture high-quality clinical images, while also standardising practice so that everyone uses the same methods of capturing images.

Why did you choose bespoke training?

Bespoke training was the ideal pathway as it allowed the session to be tailored to our specific equipment, environment, and patient needs.

Who attended the training?

The training was attended by Ophthalmic Vision Science practitioners from the imaging team at Moorfields. Their role is to support busy clinics by capturing diagnostic images such as slit lamp photography, OCT scans, and fundus imaging, which are vital for patient care and clinical decision making.

What were your favourite aspects of the day?

The hands-on element of the session was fundamental in helping everyone understand and apply the techniques effectively.

Gemma’s explanations were clear and really helped with more technical aspects, particularly when breaking down the different illumination techniques and sharing practical tips on optimising image quality. The staff thoroughly enjoyed the day and left enthusiastic and eager to start practicing with the BX 900.

Did you feel the training content was tailored to your specific needs?

Yes, the session was tailored exactly to our requirements and patient setting. The content was pitched perfectly for a mixed experience team, making the BX 900 accessible and engaging for everyone.

How would you say your team’s confidence has improved as a result of the training?

The staff are eager to start practicing with the BX 900, which speaks volumes about how effective the session was. Everyone left with a boost in confidence and a clearer understanding of how to use the system to its full potential.

Can you tell us about the trainer’s knowledge of the product?

It was clear that Gemma knows the BX 900 inside out. She made the training engaging and accessible, regardless of experience level, and offered a wealth of practical knowledge that will benefit us long after the session

Would you recommend the training to others?

I would highly recommend this training. It was thorough, practical, and engaging, with immediate impact on staff confidence and skills.

How do you anticipate that these skills will benefit your department and your patients?

Improved confidence and consistency in BX 900 imaging will lead to higher quality clinical images, which directly supports better patient outcomes and enhances the efficiency of our clinics.

The ability to apply advanced illumination techniques will also help optimise our slit lamp photography, ensuring images are reliable for diagnosis, teaching, and research.
